Candle consumption increased significantly to approx. 705.000 tons in 2020 (+7,9 %, +51.600 tons). The value, on the other hand, decreased by 1,9 % (-30 million EUR) in the same period. Each citizen of the European Union consumed an average of 1,58 kg of candles (+7,7 %) in 2020, corresponding to a wholesale price of 3,40 EUR (-2,1 %).
The European candle manufacturers managed to increase domestic production by 9,2 % or 61.600 tons to a total of 729.000 tons, despite the challenges of the pandemic. Approx. 124.000 tons were exported which is an increase of 7,6 % or 8.800 tons compared to the previous year. The imports remained more or less unchanged at approx. 100.000 tons (-1,1%, -1.100 tons).
The percentage of domestically produced candles in total consumption continues to remain at a pleasingly high level. In addition to the more attractive price, consumers can rely on the premium base materials and the superb performance of European products.
